Father’s Day Cards: Better than Other, Better than Ever
Times have changed.
30 years ago, all dad wanted was his comfy splippers, a home made lunch, the Sunday newspaper, and (if fashion conscious) a fat, windsor-knotted, polyester, striped clip-tie. Father’s Day cards, the one to four that even existed (ok, there were probably more, but that’s the memory), were mostly drier than an empty water jug.
20 years ago, chain restaurants began popping up all over the country, moving dad and fam from the Sunday dining room to the “pick your favorite” appetizer and dessert menus. Cards for dads were steadily improving while sock-ties and neon dress shirts began to lose their luster (caveat: some fathers might debate that particular claim).
10 years ago, the boom of the big box retailers transformed the dad’s day “I love you” into the latest electronic gadget or ginormous ultra-whatever machine, any of which seemed to be almost free at the time of purchase (put it on the store’s card with 6 months no interest!). Meanwhile, Father’s Day cards were the best they’d ever been, but nobody really noticed in the shadow of the latest cool stuff.
And now, here in 2010, Fathers Day Cards are taking center stage as the medium of choice for MEANING. Gifts for dad (ok, even ties) are great. Food for dad is an ongoing tradition as well. Ah, but those things are merely complimentary to the WORDS on the card you send him – for those words, as a wise person once said, are the windows to your HEART! The feelings you share in that Fathers Day card are what will make his day the best it can be.
